From February to April 2026, the implementing partners (SUZAH, Inovar Autismo and AsIAm) implemented the course within the scope of the Erasmus+ project “Self Determination Academy”. The course was developed simultaneously in Portugal, Ireland and Croatia, involving young people with and without disabilities, particularly autistic young people and young people with intellectual disabilities.
The course combined theoretical and practical components focused on self-determination, self-advocacy, human rights, communication, decision-making and community participation. Throughout the sessions, participants explored topics such as neurodiversity, disability rights, the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD), goal setting, emotional regulation, support networks and independent living. Interactive and accessible methodologies were used, including group discussions, practical exercises, role-play scenarios and self-reflection activities, ensuring the active participation of all young people involved.
Beyond the training sessions, participants also engaged in advocacy and awareness-raising initiatives connected to the objectives of the project. These activities included awareness campaigns, participation in public discussions on independent living and the development of creative tools promoting self-representation and inclusion. The implementation of the course highlighted the importance of creating accessible spaces where young people with disabilities can strengthen their confidence, understand their rights and actively participate in decisions affecting their lives and communities.
The next phase of the project will focus on evaluating the impact of the course, consolidating the project’s outputs and disseminating the results at national and international level, contributing to the promotion of inclusion, active citizenship and human rights for people with disabilities.
